Iran current events

First some history:

My friend says Xerxes is called Ḫašayaruša in Iran. We have different names for things. The Persian king sacked Athens and Sparta.

Reading about how Rome, including Marc Anthony, had trouble when they tried to conquer Persia and the Parthian empire.

Talking to an Afghanistan immigrant in the park, and he told me the Ayatollah died in 1989, and I said he was still alive. I pull up Ali Khamenei, and he pulls up Ruhollah Khomeini. We were both right.

Seems like Iran is in a holding pattern waiting for the Israel retaliation for the latest missile attack

A sort of continuation of the cold war, proxy wars, asymmetrical warfare, Iran meets with Putin

Hezbollah, Hamas and and maybe Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine–General Command (PFLP-GC) in Syria are all supported by Iran.

This situation is boosting Israeli hardliners (Foreign Affairs).

10/23/24 Why Is Israel Poised to Attack Iran? NY Times:

When it launched its missile barrage on Oct. 1., Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps said it was retaliating for the assassination of Mr. Haniyeh and also for the killing in late September of Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, as well as for the killing of an Iranian commander. Days after Mr. Nasrallah’s death, Israel invaded southern Lebanon, pummeling Hezbollah, Iran’s most important proxy.

They call it a shadow war.

Democracy or democrazy?

Admittedly the choice between corrupt democrats and corrupt republicans isn't the political choice I want. I'd rather vote my way towards fairness, elimination of poverty, anti-trust laws that fight the consolidation of corporations (you read about grocery stores lately?), education, infrastructure. What you do get is a vote for democrats that vote to end rail strikes ( source ) because they can't carve out of the profits a sick leave, versus reality denying, Russian bought, obstructionists who might lower taxes, and want smaller government. The Ron Swanson's of the world who hate government and work in government. I've been running into people who believe the corrupt choices aren't worth even making. Reasons not to pay attention.I've thought that a few times in my life, but I don't think that now.  There are real choices about health care for women, and even just an attitude towards democracy. It's hard to fight past the rhetoric, and understand eve...

Brilliant video explaining the exhibit. Go to the Met and see the exhibit! It's really quite special.  In the last gallery the painting this sketch is based off of, of the execution of a Mexican president. The painting has been cut into sections, and the surviving Degas has reassembled them. NY Times review
