Democracy or democrazy?

Admittedly the choice between corrupt democrats and corrupt republicans isn't the political choice I want. I'd rather vote my way towards fairness, elimination of poverty, anti-trust laws that fight the consolidation of corporations (you read about grocery stores lately?), education, infrastructure. What you do get is a vote for democrats that vote to end rail strikes ( source ) because they can't carve out of the profits a sick leave, versus reality denying, Russian bought, obstructionists who might lower taxes, and want smaller government. The Ron Swanson's of the world who hate government and work in government. I've been running into people who believe the corrupt choices aren't worth even making. Reasons not to pay attention.I've thought that a few times in my life, but I don't think that now.  There are real choices about health care for women, and even just an attitude towards democracy. It's hard to fight past the rhetoric, and understand eve...

Election Results

The federal legislature is too close to call, the results aren't all in for the Senate and House Results that Democrats like Fetterman won in PA Hochul won governor New York over Zeldin Ralph Warnock beat Herschel Walker. But there’s going to be a runoff because it was close. Letitia James has won her reelection as New York’s Attorney General. Whitmer remains in Michigan. Democrats won control of both the Michigan state Senate and Michigan state House. Democrats will now have full control of Michigan state government. Governor Evers won in Wisconsin and Republicans didn't get a super majority.  Chuck Schumer has won his senate reelection in New York. Maura Healy won in Massachusetts Democrats have flipped the entire State Senate of Minnesota Mary Peltola beat Sarah Palin in Alaska for the 3rd time in a Republican state. Kari Lake lost in Arizona to Katie Hobbs in Governor race. Dough Mastriano lost to Josh Shapiro in PA governor race. Democrat Greg Landsman in Ohio has been el...

Liz Cheney

It's such a relief when the opposing party can call out their own assholes, it kind of lends a air of objectivity to a fairly subjective process. Liz Cheney's politics are rancid from my perspective, but she's potentially carving out a presidential run, after being voted out of office for breaking ranks and getting ahead of the curve. Oh and holding Trump accountable for his criminal behaviors. No small thing. Just like I can say Biden is doing amazing for American standards and criticize him for not doing more from a progressive viewpoint. Politics is about having ideas about how things should be, and then kludging something anyway. I can hate Cheney's voting record but also applaud her American decency.  (Did you read about the Florida candidate who got his twitter account suspended for saying he will make a law that it's okay to shoot FBI, IRS or other government officials? ( source )) I've always thought the first female president would come from the right. ...

To regulate big tech or not?

The question isn't yes or no, but how to be honest. There's an article in the NY Times . It provoked in me the question, do we lets these avaricious capitalist harm our society, or do we regulate it communism style? Of course those aren't all the choices, but that is what is being chosen in this moment.  How can we make people do the right thing? Government is a terrible blunt weapon. Capitalism is a terribly selfish and harmful weapon.  The fantasy growing up for me was that if we can just educate people enough. But that's not an opinion that is popular enough and the education isn't effective enough. I'm a wreck of a person, more akin to a baseball player who doesn't get on base most of the time. Tepid democratic capitalism will regulate it eventually, and the capitalists will throw up their arms. From my perspective, the Chinese government regulating and taking over the social media industry just feels wrong. It is possible for the America tech giants to ...

Founders of America

I'm reading These Truths: A History Of The United States by Jill Lepore and am struck by reading a history that emphasizes the rebellion against slavery. There were parallels in not wanting taxation without representation and slavery that many pointed out. If we could have only abolished slavery at the beginning we could have saved ourselves a lot of trouble. I'd say one trait of American history is that we give in to greed quite easily. I thought about setting myself a course of learning about the founders : John Adams   First vice president and second president. Benjamin Franklin   Author, printer, political theorist, politician, Freemason, postmaster, scientist, inventor, humorist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. Alexander Hamilton  Wrote most of the Federalist Papers. Inspired musical Hamilton. John Jay  Wrote 5 of the Federalist Papers. First chief justice of the USA. Thomas Jefferson   He wrote the Declaration of Independence . Third pre...
