Iranian films

Recently watched some films, hoping to understand Iran better. They were The Holy Spider, A Persian Melody (Jameh Daran) (2015) and The Salesman (2016), Azar, Shahdokht, Parviz and Others (2014)

My Iranian friend recommended The Salesman. Quite a horrible scenario. A john comes by his old hooker's place, and someone else lives there, but he rapes the woman anyway. The husband is busy teaching school and acting in Death of a Salesman, and isn't maximally supportive to his wife, but he's busy. Woof.

A Persian Melody starts out confusing and weird, and then you kind of learn about the secrets and lies. This movie is on Tubi at the moment.

The Holy Spider is about a man who killed 16 prostitutes before he was caught, and he thought he was going to be let go because he fought in the Iran-Iraq War 1980-1988, and he thought he was doing god's work. Quite a horrible and grim movie, but somehow good in exposing some injustice and quirks of society. This movie is on Netflix at the moment.

I came away thinking, wow, Iranian men are repressed and brutal, and Iranian women are oppressed and they're all depressed, but some fight back.

Supposedly right wing women deny oppression to cope with life. There's so much horror in life, you see along the way.

I don't think you can legislate spirituality, and forcing everyone to pretend like they're pious doesn't work. If every woman has to wear a headscarf, then it's not about modesty, which it was originally about, now it's just about obedience. They steal the meaning from it.

With Iran lobbing missiles into Israel, there's clearly some confused energy. My friend thinks the government is about making everyone miserable.

He liked this song, it was from Footloose, and I told him I was in high school when it came out in 1984. I told him about the plot and I learned you can't dance in public in Iran either.

Azar, Shahdokht, Parviz and Others (2016) is an intense movie. I really liked it.

My friend recommends Ghaveyeh Talkh, Bitter Coffee 2010-present, a TV show.

Bonus quote about rating movies:

Alex Falcone identified the online review sweet spot: “We all know that one- and five-star reviews are useless; those are just crackpots and bots. Three stars are for cowards, obviously; if you can’t be bothered to have a courageous opinion, I can’t be bothered to read it. And four stars are for liberal arts majors who had a three-star experience but grew up with grade inflation. But a two-star review, that’s a thing of beauty. Somebody who goes through the trouble of logging into an app and typing full sentences on a keyboard to give a place exactly two stars has a story to tell.”

Democracy or democrazy?

Admittedly the choice between corrupt democrats and corrupt republicans isn't the political choice I want. I'd rather vote my way towards fairness, elimination of poverty, anti-trust laws that fight the consolidation of corporations (you read about grocery stores lately?), education, infrastructure. What you do get is a vote for democrats that vote to end rail strikes ( source ) because they can't carve out of the profits a sick leave, versus reality denying, Russian bought, obstructionists who might lower taxes, and want smaller government. The Ron Swanson's of the world who hate government and work in government. I've been running into people who believe the corrupt choices aren't worth even making. Reasons not to pay attention.I've thought that a few times in my life, but I don't think that now.  There are real choices about health care for women, and even just an attitude towards democracy. It's hard to fight past the rhetoric, and understand eve...

Manet and Degas

Brilliant video explaining the exhibit. Go to the Met and see the exhibit! It's really quite special.  In the last gallery the painting this sketch is based off of, of the execution of a Mexican president. The painting has been cut into sections, and the surviving Degas has reassembled them. NY Times review
