A bad moment of public relations

The Republican response to Gus Walz was embarrassing. Gus Walz had an emotional reaction to seeing his father on stage, and got up and said, "that's my father," while he was speaking. Gus is a person with a non-verbal learning disorder. I worked in special education and social work, and I'd never heard that one before, but found it on the internet. It's similar but different than autism.

A radio host from Wisconsin Jay Weber apologizes for his negative comments. I think radio hosts are prone to say outrageous things to attract attention, and lose their sense of propriety. He used to be a school teacher and ought to know better. But it's almost like the right wing thinks doing something stupid then apologizing is worth the attention it all gets. He has a history of bad tweets.

He has attacked other president's children in the past.

Ann Coulter is a 61 year old right wing journalists, writer and commentator who has been engaged 3 times, but all 3 times the wedding was called off. She has no children and might be a childless cat lady. She took down her tweet that said Gus Walz wasn't normal. She has a law degree and in her non-apology blamed the left for calling everyone weird.

“ Just a friendly reminder that Gus Walz didn’t get emotional “because he’s neurodiverse” He got emotional because his parents didn’t force him to experience toxic masculinity.” (Source)

People Magazine of all people shares the outrage at such a public relations disaster. I don't think they really understand how to express their dislike because of political bias.

I found this expression of distaste for this lack of awareness gratifying.

Conservatism is a valid political perspective, to not change things much, to want less government, want to lower taxes. But zealotry of some of the people, well it's beyond, and there are carnival barkers like Bobert and MTG, who really go all out to try and distract in culture wars. I keep telling myself to keep it walking, keep it walking, but I find myself drawn into commenting. I need more discipline.

The zealotry and passion is what each party want, really they want enough energy for you to get off the couch and vote. That's the important thing. You can have all the political ideas you want, but voting is quite crucial, and I could imagine some in NY think that Harris will win anyway, why bother, but you do actually have to get out and vote. My conservative leaning friend doesn't vote often, and that's OK with me, but I really want all people to vote, even my conservative friends.

Manet and Degas

Brilliant video explaining the exhibit. Go to the Met and see the exhibit! It's really quite special.  In the last gallery the painting this sketch is based off of, of the execution of a Mexican president. The painting has been cut into sections, and the surviving Degas has reassembled them. NY Times review

6 month old podcast

Al Franken has a podcast , and he has my favorite Heather Cox Richardson , and they have an interesting discussion. He talks about the knife edge. She really explains the Republican strategy. Flood the zone with shit. Alternate facts, and fake news opens up the idea that there is no reality. It's basically reality versus false reality.  The goal is to both get people to back away from politics, and to tell them how to specifically think. Developed in Russia, a system of overturning democracy. Running fake candidates, who switch parties, and running candidates with the same name. Blackmail is a technique. Create a fake reality that people come to believe. They're willing to vote for a narrative is not true, and they're willing to vote away their rights.  You can flip it and use the same tools. You can weaponize social media by ignoring the shit, and fight back against all these techniques. People defend democracy. They're talking about community and caring for people and ...
