New Music to me

I recently posted Hiromi (Wikipedia), a Japanese pianist and composer.

Been listening to Eloy a German progrock band who have put out albums from 1971-2023.

Listening to Cassiopeia, the band has changed iterations and it's currently on Cassiopeia P4, who have 3 albums out now.

That got me into the drummer Akira Jimbo

Also been listening to Hot Fuss by The Killers.

Not sure if I mentioned I was into Frank Zappa's Hot Rats.

Kind of Green (2010) by Pylf is amazing.

Pepper Adams Encounter! (1969, but must have been changed and updated to get 1996 on Spotify)

Eliane Elias has a new album out on Spotify.

There's an article on mellow piano music. I'm listening to Nils Frahm on Spotify. And Lubomyr Melnyk. Makes me think of Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou. I created a playlist

Listening to a playlist of Elvis Costello Covers. That got me onto a Norwegian band Elektrisk Regn! They existed from 1978-2008.

I watched They Shot The Piano Player (2023), and got into Francisco Tenório Júnior (Spotify)(Wikipedia).

There's an ocean of music out there.

Old music:

Playing 1977 Boston self titled album to my 8 year old daughter. Here's what Wikipedia says about it's legacy:

Boston has been described as a pivot in the transition of mainstream American rock from blues-based proto-metal to power pop, "combining some of the ebullience of the rock era's early days with the precision and technology that would mark rock record productions from then on." All eight songs—most commonly the album's A-side—are in constant rotation on classic rock radio. Boston's success ushered in the next wave of "producer" rock sound. Following the album's success, its sound became imitated by several other prominent rock bands of the era. The record created a reference point for production values and studio technology that would stand for years. The album is hailed as one of the greatest in rock history, with an inclusion in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. The album was also ranked No. 43 on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "Definitive 200" list.

Then I played 2001 Voices by Mike Stern. Richard Bona is the real star of this album. I saw Stern in Oakland with a great drummer, Jeff "Train" Watts. Great set, and then I saw him at the 55 Bar in Manhattan and it wasn't as good. He's fine, but the backup was the less impressive at the NY gig.

Manet and Degas

Brilliant video explaining the exhibit. Go to the Met and see the exhibit! It's really quite special.  In the last gallery the painting this sketch is based off of, of the execution of a Mexican president. The painting has been cut into sections, and the surviving Degas has reassembled them. NY Times review

movie versus book

I'm watching the movie a second time, and I'm halfway through the book. Among the movie's differences from the book. Sortilege starts off narrating. The movie doesn't have the school bell for the phone either, just a regular ring. It's really weird the way Doc shouts when he sees the photo of Amethyst as a baby. I guess it's to dramatize the negative impact of being pregnant and using, but the child we see looks pretty healthy. The child doesn't huff out because they're boring like she did in the book.  Superficially The Big Lebowski and Inherent Vice are similar but it's a completely different style of narrative. The Coen brothers are amazing, they have a very witty movie that I have loved for a long time. Pynchon is a whole other realm of fiction, and this conversion is fairly faithful, taking out the best lines and making it more compact. The audio book is 15 hours, the movie is 2 hours. Anyway, I like the different movies for different reasons. T...

The case for Harris

Motley Kamuka Blog endorses Kamala Harris. In general, Trump just wants to lower taxes on the rich, and do nothing, sell whatever influence he can to line his pockets. Apparently the emoluments clause in the constitution has no teeth. Harris has a set of ideas about policy that are fairly middle of the road. In most countries she's would be seen as a centrist. Spin about her radical agendas are exaggerated.  I'm not sure how he got past " grab them by the pussy ", but he did and here we are. Women: Obviously the idea of giving women pregnancy tests at the borders of the state, and then if they come back and don't have a baby, they go to jail, isn't really what most women want. Pick Harris.  I understand if you think abortion is murder, maybe you've been told that by the Catholic church, which has the same ideal of Buddhism that you don't kill--so follow your religion for yourself. Not everyone is Christian or Buddhist or even has a religion. Women are ...
