If I were president of the USA

First thing, a well armed militia doesn't have guns at home, they have their guns at the gun club. Let everyone keep their guns, but no more buying guns as individuals. Gradually fade out. Humans are limited by their life spans, but we need to start thinking beyond our lifespan. The plague of gun violence, only in America, needs to be address. The 45 children that die each year for the supposed right must end, that is not a fair trade. Only militias. Tax gun companies for all the medical costs they create. (California thought of the idea too)

I grew up shooting guns, my grandfather taught me to respect guns. I had BB guns, but when I took it home to my parents, I never shot it. The culture of my parents wasn't about guns.

I shot skeet with friends in high school. My friends had guns. My uncle had a gun. I like shooting guns, it's a rush. I went hunting even, but never got anything.

The hunting culture in Wisconsin is strong. Just go to the militia to pick up your guns. Play paintball all you want.

The consequence would be more money for hospitals with the tax. Gradually fewer and fewer guns would be around. Families can have their gun culture and pass down guns. You can go to the gun club and practice, go to the hunting clubs to pick up guns to go hunting, you can be in the military or the police to play with guns. Or you can inherit a gun from family where a family feels it's important, a father passes it down to his son.

Buyback programs and all that. Reduce the amount of guns. The consequences is fewer death by homicide and suicide.

Have social workers go into rural communities to work with the NRA types. Part of the domestic peace corps.

Integrity and maturity tests for guns, working for the government, running for office. Not quite enforcing it but bring it up. Values exploration, ethics reflection, virtue reflection. You have to go on a year long journey with papers and learning. Not heavy handed. Not being crazy like China, calling other people out and reporting on people. But somehow a mechanism for getting in hot water for doing shady things.

I would immediately tax churches who make political statements. Inspectors go to sermons, evidence from social media and whatnot. Second they're caught that's a few years of taxes. Spirituality has nothing to do with politics, except I do think if you are spiritual you want to help people, so honestly I think having good strong government is a spiritual thing. Secular humanism is a spirituality. If we truly had a spiritual society we would be a lot kinder, so I do think spirituality is important. End religion as a trick.

I think self reliance is important. Government is about correcting society ills, and people who need help shouldn't have to beg to the rich, everyone should have housing, food, education, health care, and transportation. You don't have to work, and you don't even have to really even apply, you just get basic. Universal income. Do everything you can to lower taxes, but also make sure nobody has it rough. A fair and balanced society.

These mega churches that preach abundance theology. Everything past a certain point is taxed. I would have people close in there to make sure they were staying spiritual and not drifting into materialism. We get a cut of that.

Nobody would tell anyone how to worship, or pray but the second you get out the jet ski or buy a mansion, there'd be lots of inspectors. You want a humble small church with a humble minister, you're left alone. I would make it hard on mega churches with "abundance theology" trick.

Really educate the population about religion like they do in England. They study every religion. I didn't get to find out about Taoism and Buddhism until 11th grade. Religion as sociology doesn't impact people's personal spiritual evolution. It just gives information. Not putting anything forward. Just understand how it functions in society. Encourage parents and children to talk to each other with school assignments.

Decriminalize drug use, and ramp up treatment. Evidence based treatment. Whatever the experts think. Treatments aren't very effective and some see as a waste of money, but addiction is horrible and crazy. Really educate people. Tax beer and weed and shrooms to cover the costs. Trump was surprisingly quiet when that whole beer thing went down, and he owns a lot of beer stock, so you know, that just shows he wasn't in control of their weird beast he thinks he controls. No more culture wars and judging addiction.

That tech company that posted "whites only" need apply. That has to be the tip of the iceberg. Companies will get diversity report cards, and gender equality report cards, and they will have to come up with action plans to better represent their community.

The military spending will come way down. We're not getting invaded by Canada or Mexico. Who are you kidding? Let the world take care of itself. Not isolationist, give money to countries that are poor. Make them write grants, that prevent rulers from just taking the money and flying away. We know how to deal with corruption now. Unleash an army of accountants and monitors and diplomats.

Create complicated and take long programs to immigrate that are equal to what people do to get to America and other countries. A global migration policy. My grandfather wanted to get rid of the UN. Cut half the stuff that doesn't work and build up the stuff that does work. Collaborate with effective altruism.

Police work, you have to get a social work degree. Your motivation has to be kindness not wanting to play with guns. As gun use gets under control, fewer and fewer carry guns. They have a locked room back at the precinct for emergencies. Lots of hours at the gun range. Gun safety classes up the wazoo. Police run the gun license classes.

Health insurance dies, the rich can get it if they want, but socialized medicine, do it the right way, if you find problems fix it, don't say get rid of it. No more prisons or schools for hire. Reverse privatization. Get rid of profit by saying no to life saving procedures.

End this nonsense of making women carry unviable babies in red states. If you're against abortion don't have an abortion. Support people's moral development to make the right choice, you're not going to get rid of the people who fight against killing potential humans. Create a society where women don't think it will kill their lives to have children. Make child care low cost and widely available. That would be huge. If women felt reliable child care was around, then they won't see having children as so life wrecking. You can go to work.

Community mental health centers. Small ones sprinkled around. They already exist, but reinforce, and extend. Have one member there with the gun education classes. If that seems heavy handed, then lay off. Humans are quite limited and one man's common sense is another man's crazy talk. I know it's confusing but we can organize ourselves to be more supportive and better. We're evolving as a society. Have ways for people to be involved. You make a comment on social media, come in and help out, do more that spout on social media.

Public health is important. Figure out how to counteract African Americans thinking menthols are healthier cigarettes. Have people giving out the right messages. Case studies of what didn't work, and case studies of what really worked. Snuff out problems globally. Transfer some money from military into these global efforts. Military and police must do more public health.

Nationalize education so there aren't these savage inequalities (Read Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol). Level the playing field.

Get rid of education for profit with government money. No more charter schools. Do that in public education, but without the profit.

Destroy all the laws that hamper what teachers can teach about and invest in teacher education and development and salaries. National law that strikes away any law that says you can't teach X, Y or Z. History or gender information. We learn about the negative things in the past, and focus on present day solutions that counteract the culture that continues. Take the money from military and put it in health care and education. We don't have to be hysterical about present but rare transgender experience that just became a public topic but was always there. Men can cry and toxic masculinity public health campaigns. Really believe in public health.

Lifelong education. Fund existing libraries, gradual increases, quit this game of cutbacks and closings. If you want to control what your children have access to, don't focus on libraries, focus on your home and educating your children. But help people see how the book Gender Queer is a great book, and not something to be feared. And the 5% where these people are right, respect that somehow. Learn how to blend in people's instincts in positive ways, help them go on a journey.

School sports is based on sex, not gender expression. Boys who are now girls, compete against biological boys if they want or not. Keep trans sensitivity everywhere, but no more boys who think they are girls winning girls events. That's obvious and makes everyone look silly. It's rare but it does happen in America. Boys who think they are girls can compete with girls but they can't win prizes because we know their sex and their chosen gender expression.

Bathroom are gender expression, not sex. More family or individual bathrooms. More unisex bathrooms. If some guy goes into a women's bathroom to do something nasty, that's not about trans people, that's just an asshole.

Devote more resources to ecology and fighting the impact of humans on global warming. You love nature? Come work for X, Y and Z. Have the military and peace corps and domestic peace corps working on environmental solutions, and park rangers.

Supreme Court: First impeach the corrupt justices. Code of ethics, external monitors. You lost the right to monitor yourself. No more trusting the top to do the right thing, there needs to be checks and balances, especially for unelected appointed officials. No more lifelong appointments.

Term limits. You can't work past 80. I'm sorry Ruth, you don't get those last 7 years on the court. Ditto for president, you can't run if you're going to turn 80 while in office. That means Biden can't run this year. Trump can't run either since he's 77. New people, thank you. Aging out. I know it took Biden so long to wrestle himself into power, but you know, step aside.

Housing: Public housing is basic, drives down real estate prices. Gives jobs in construction. Really do it right so it's not seen as something corrupt or inefficient. Regulate housing make sure these corrupt greedy horrible landlords feel uncomfortable, get out of the profession. In my opinion this is a huge area to improve society. Really value people who work smart here. Retain talent.

NPR and PBS are refunded. I loved living in England and they had 4 channels. People hated the poll tax because that paid for it. People snuck TVs without paying the TV tax. Figure it out. A well funded state media is now known to be the only way to keep a stable way of reporting to the people. The world benefits from BBC reporting, and other outlets that get perspectives across. PBS Newshour is vital.

Somehow take care of the hate government people, right wing. Include them in government, and tend to their preferences at times. Allow their expression. The people who hated FDR created Reagan. Understand that political perspectives are limited but important. Where is the fat we can cut from government? Harness this energy somehow, tend to the concerns some, allow for debate, don't denigrate people, really respect political perspective and don't just have glee when your side wins. Avoid the culture of loving sticking it to the other side.

They can be the corruption hunters. Root out corruption and make things better. Help people in rural areas understand how cities work, even if they hate them. Really have a dialogue about what is going on in America on prime time TV and YouTube.

Get rid of electoral college, straight vote. False reports of election fraud are punished strongly. Keep election and democracy integrity.

Address emerging issues quickly. Internet, AI, global warming.

Collaboration, I know my ideas aren't the only ones, they're not even mine, I'm parroting them from others. There's nothing new. We all use ideas, greater understanding of how ideas and thinking works. We need a relational society.

Universal income (one article).

Democracy or democrazy?

Admittedly the choice between corrupt democrats and corrupt republicans isn't the political choice I want. I'd rather vote my way towards fairness, elimination of poverty, anti-trust laws that fight the consolidation of corporations (you read about grocery stores lately?), education, infrastructure. What you do get is a vote for democrats that vote to end rail strikes ( source ) because they can't carve out of the profits a sick leave, versus reality denying, Russian bought, obstructionists who might lower taxes, and want smaller government. The Ron Swanson's of the world who hate government and work in government. I've been running into people who believe the corrupt choices aren't worth even making. Reasons not to pay attention.I've thought that a few times in my life, but I don't think that now.  There are real choices about health care for women, and even just an attitude towards democracy. It's hard to fight past the rhetoric, and understand eve...

Consent

You couldn't have a better title to a memoir in these times. You can read about Humbert Humbert, and other male narratives, but the female narrative of the statutory rape is fulfilled by this book. I feel slightly ill while reading this book. What she goes through is off, and it's hard to put a finger on it besides  Hebephilia . All the collaborating details from her mother, to her doctors, to her father. Vanessa Springora will be remembered for other things, she is a director and a publisher. I'm not sure if  Gabriel Matzneff will be remembered for other things. At least not on this side of the pond. I do have a kind of jealousy for the appreciation of the intellectual life in France.  Matzneff cites Lewis Carroll , and others as having the appreciation for youth. I read his Wikipedia page. That led to other questions about photographers who take pictures of their children. That led me down a creepy path. As much as Springora tries to not make it sexy, I wonder ho...
