83 million reasons why politics is different than courts of law

Trump learned that politics might often allow you to get away with things, but in time, the courts will hold you accountable, and that in fact you can't just do whatever you want regardless of the law. He likes to pretend he could get away with murder, and to some extent he did. His Covid lack of policy is said to have increased the death tolls by 40%. So in a way, he has gotten away with murder.

This was just a minor case, he's got serious ones going on still. There's a civil fraud case in New York, in which they're asking for $370 million. He has 4 cases regarding his attempts to overthrow the election he lost. 91 felony charges are yet to be ruled on.

He lost $5 million in the case already, and couldn't shut up, kept on defaming her. He's essentially paid 83 million dollars to not have to obey the law and just not further slander a woman he sexually assaulted. So far. I thought 5 million was a lot, but they argued in the case that he was worth 14 billion in real estate, and that punitive financial damages should have large numbers.

If they can squeeze this money out of him, he's wounded. He's going to have to put up 83 million dollar to appeal this case, so you know you can say, "he's going to appeal the case," but he's got to put the money in the courts hands to appeal the case. That's not nothing. She won't see the money, until it's all over, but he won't have it either. I think she will eventually see the money.

"appeal bond in NY is 120%?!? So dipshit has to have ~$100M in cash just to appeal this thing?" (twitter). That's capital that won't be earning for him. ROI on real estate is around 10%. He's losing $100,000 a year on that money. I spend $300 a month of food, so that looks like a lot of money to me.

What's he got to lose now? Can they sue him for more money if he keeps defaming E. Jean Carroll? It went from 5m to 83.3m, what's the next step up? Do you think he'll shut up now?

There's more reconing and accountability coming from the courts, where lying isn't quite as successful as it is in politics.

"On one recent day, he made more than 40 derisive posts about Ms. Carroll on his Truth Social website." (NY Times)

He can say the court is being used for politics, but he's not right, and he's the one confused between courts and politics.

"Ms. Carroll’s lead lawyer, Roberta A. Kaplan, said the verdict “proves that the law applies to everyone in our country, even the rich, even the famous, even former presidents.”" (op cit)

"In the end, Mr. Trump, by his actions and words, was his own worst enemy." (op cit)

"In their closing arguments on Friday, Ms. Carroll’s lawyers, Ms. Kaplan and Shawn G. Crowley, used Mr. Trump’s presence in court as a weapon against him. Ms. Crowley said his actions demonstrated his belief that he could get away with anything, including continuing to defame Ms. Carroll." (op cit)

"For the first time in weeks, Trump didn’t post a single word about E. Jean Carroll last night. Turns out punitive damages work." twitter.

Outside the MAGA cult, there might be the biggest schadenfreude event in the history of humanity, which is probably because the population is at it's greatest at the moment, and Trump is much hated around the world.

To watch Giuliani sue him for unpaid legal expenses, as he files for bankruptcy is delicious. To watch those two grubbers penny pinch each other... Because Giuliani is bankrupt, they're going to come after Trump's unpaid bills, and he's got creditors coming at him from all angles for his various lawsuits and whatnot. I see the image of sinking ships.

I love it that these women won't let go. The NY DA, the Georgia DA, Nikki Haley, E. Jean Carroll. When male cowards who work for him and then later repudiate him, to sell their books, or in legislature can't stand up to him...

Trump has to be exhausted with all the lying. It's come out he may have pretended to have lost $50 million to avoid paying taxes. I'll feel pity for him when he's lost the election, until then he's going to get pounded on and pounded on. I know that envirates his cult, but average Americans and independents will hopefully begin to hear the message.

Democracy or democrazy?

Admittedly the choice between corrupt democrats and corrupt republicans isn't the political choice I want. I'd rather vote my way towards fairness, elimination of poverty, anti-trust laws that fight the consolidation of corporations (you read about grocery stores lately?), education, infrastructure. What you do get is a vote for democrats that vote to end rail strikes ( source ) because they can't carve out of the profits a sick leave, versus reality denying, Russian bought, obstructionists who might lower taxes, and want smaller government. The Ron Swanson's of the world who hate government and work in government. I've been running into people who believe the corrupt choices aren't worth even making. Reasons not to pay attention.I've thought that a few times in my life, but I don't think that now.  There are real choices about health care for women, and even just an attitude towards democracy. It's hard to fight past the rhetoric, and understand eve

Consent

You couldn't have a better title to a memoir in these times. You can read about Humbert Humbert, and other male narratives, but the female narrative of the statutory rape is fulfilled by this book. I feel slightly ill while reading this book. What she goes through is off, and it's hard to put a finger on it besides  Hebephilia . All the collaborating details from her mother, to her doctors, to her father. Vanessa Springora will be remembered for other things, she is a director and a publisher. I'm not sure if  Gabriel Matzneff will be remembered for other things. At least not on this side of the pond. I do have a kind of jealousy for the appreciation of the intellectual life in France.  Matzneff cites Lewis Carroll , and others as having the appreciation for youth. I read his Wikipedia page. That led to other questions about photographers who take pictures of their children. That led me down a creepy path. As much as Springora tries to not make it sexy, I wonder how many
