What I watched today

I'm trying to read more but my daughter has been under the weather, and so I've been watching TV because I can pause, and the interruptions don't jar as much as reading interruptions where I really need to concentrate.

Now why do I need to say I'm trying to read more? I suppose there's something about watching the idiot box that makes me want to compensate. No commercials though, that's such a relief. I really like TV without commercials.

I say TV, but I'm streaming on my laptop.

I watched the Archer final movie, or whatever it's called. I really liked that show and I've watched it over and over, but a few months ago, it flipped on me, and I wasn't as interested. And for some reason this last movie didn't interest me. It wasn't bad, I just don't remember much from watching it. There are a few funny lines like Glarry Poppins for the new character. And the resolution was ambiguous. There could be more.

Then I watched Leave The World Behind (2023). Amanda doesn't like people. She confesses that she has to figure out people she hates out to sell them things they don't need, and that irks her. Clay is a professor of English and Media, but the media isn't really explained. He runs around trying to make Amanda happy. They have a daughter who is watching Friends and a son, who masterbates and loses his teeth. They rent a place in Long Island to get away, and when things go cattywampus, the owners come back, and ask to stay the night. But they're black, a father and a daughter, and Amanda distrusts them. I've already given away too much, but it's interesting. Kevin Bacon is the survivalist. It's scares me, I'm not really into thrillers and horror movies, but it wasn't too bad. Looking up Julia Roberts, she's my age. I saw Kevin Bacon in Central Park once.

Then against my instincts, I started watching Carol & The End of the World. A exoplanet is going to hit the earth in 7 months and everyone is aggressively trying to live their best lives by adventure sports and trips to Tibet, but she prefers to work in an accounting office where nobody will talk to her, they just want to distract themselves with business. Many people are naked because with 7 months to live, who cares. Trying to find meaning in the betweens the extremes of aggressive living your best life and workaholism. Again race is addressed at the end of the world. I like it. If apocalyptic fiction is so popular, why not inject some meaningful exploration of race in America. I've stalled on the 4th episode. That's a hard episode to like. Her sister hounds her with forced intimacy that isn't natural. Hard to watch.

I've also been watching Young Sheldon, which I enjoy because it's a pretty dynamic family drama. Part Big Bang Theory, part Friday Night Lights exploration of what it means to be a Texan. I like the exploration of Baptist culture. I love Dr. John Sturgis. Annie Potts is Memaw. Zoe Perry actually is Laurie Metcalf's daughter, so there's continuity there, though honestly they don't look that much alike.

I watched the last Rick and Morty season 7. I love the show but it is getting less and less interesting to me. I think the quality of season 7 is still quite top and I've watched it over and over, just like I have every other season. I'm quite sad the season is over, and it's going to be hard to wait until ... they've never started the season ever on the same month: December, July, April, November, June, Steptember, October. So I won't know when the next ones are coming. Seems random.

Democracy or democrazy?

Admittedly the choice between corrupt democrats and corrupt republicans isn't the political choice I want. I'd rather vote my way towards fairness, elimination of poverty, anti-trust laws that fight the consolidation of corporations (you read about grocery stores lately?), education, infrastructure. What you do get is a vote for democrats that vote to end rail strikes ( source ) because they can't carve out of the profits a sick leave, versus reality denying, Russian bought, obstructionists who might lower taxes, and want smaller government. The Ron Swanson's of the world who hate government and work in government. I've been running into people who believe the corrupt choices aren't worth even making. Reasons not to pay attention.I've thought that a few times in my life, but I don't think that now.  There are real choices about health care for women, and even just an attitude towards democracy. It's hard to fight past the rhetoric, and understand eve

Consent

You couldn't have a better title to a memoir in these times. You can read about Humbert Humbert, and other male narratives, but the female narrative of the statutory rape is fulfilled by this book. I feel slightly ill while reading this book. What she goes through is off, and it's hard to put a finger on it besides  Hebephilia . All the collaborating details from her mother, to her doctors, to her father. Vanessa Springora will be remembered for other things, she is a director and a publisher. I'm not sure if  Gabriel Matzneff will be remembered for other things. At least not on this side of the pond. I do have a kind of jealousy for the appreciation of the intellectual life in France.  Matzneff cites Lewis Carroll , and others as having the appreciation for youth. I read his Wikipedia page. That led to other questions about photographers who take pictures of their children. That led me down a creepy path. As much as Springora tries to not make it sexy, I wonder how many
