Counter winds

De Santi's culture wars ape government overreach in an attempt to avoid real interventions against gun violence, and health care with distracting nonsense that is crafted to mobilize his base. "I don't like government," as they drive on roads created by the government, get trash hauled away by the government, deposit their social security checks in the FDIC protected bank accounts. "I don't like government" as they meddle with Disney, tell teachers what they can teach.

Luckily Ohio didn't fall for Ohio's nonsense attempt to try and block democracy. (twitter

I'm going to deadname X because while it's wrong to deadname for individuals, and it's wrong for Elon Musk to do it against his own child, I think it is deserved for a corporation that has basically wrecked the best method for following soccer news, and spreading information. That is why he's wrecking it and opened it up to far right wingnuts. He's suing a watch group the puts a mirror to his actions--he's going to not win like Trump has never won a lawsuit, always quickly dismissed without merit. The law is about truth, and their nonsense doesn't fly in court.

Musk also like stochastic violence threats (Scientific American). If he didn't pay 44 billion to wreck the platform, he would be banned. He's wrecking it on purpose because he doesn't like free speech. And he's monetizing it because volume and advertisements are way down.

I'm as postmodern about the truth as the next guy, although I believe like Roger Trigg that Reality at Risk means you can't throw it all out. I don't care if Tarki's theory of truth doesn't work, we have a common sense notion of what truth is.

Lot with his daughters.

Today is the day of the Pueblo Revolt. Native Americans took back their right to self determination against Spanish rule in New Mexico. Po’pay of Ohkay Owingeh organized and led the revolt (source). "The successful revolt kept the Spanish out of New Mexico for 12 years, and established a different power dynamic upon their return. The Pueblo Revolt holds great historical significance because it helped ensure the survival of Pueblo cultural traditions, lands, languages, religions, and sovereignty."

The Pueblo Revolt killed 400 Spaniards and drove the remaining 2,000 settlers out of the province (Wikipedia).

It's a sad day that a Ecuadorian presidential candidate was assassinated. He was the most vocal critic of organized crime in the upcoming election. (New York Times) Fernando Villavicencio was gunned down inside his car.

"Foreign drug mafias have joined forces with local prison and street gangs, unleashing a wave of violence unlike anything in the country’s recent history. Homicide rates are at record levels."

"There are regular reports of car bombings, beheadings and children being gunned down outside their schools."

"Mr. Lasso disbanded the country’s opposition-led National Assembly in May, a drastic move he made as he faced impeachment proceedings over accusations of embezzlement."

"The vote in which Mr. Villavicencio was supposed to compete is set for Aug. 20; a second round of voting will be held in October if no single candidate wins a clear victory."

Just tell me truth speaking journalist and politicians don't matter.

For the death is an OK outcome party, the rise in suicides will be an acceptable outcome. Dramatic distractions are what that party is about. Death is OK, we're all going to die and reducing government might be about trying to increase disillusionment. But more people are killing themselves (source).

Manet and Degas

Brilliant video explaining the exhibit. Go to the Met and see the exhibit! It's really quite special.  In the last gallery the painting this sketch is based off of, of the execution of a Mexican president. The painting has been cut into sections, and the surviving Degas has reassembled them. NY Times review

AOC

Dark Brandon meet Dark Alex. I see her advising the republicans to stick to their guns and never compromise. They don’t want to do anything, only obstruct. So they don’t actually need to be unified. Chaos isn’t organized. This is fine. Read all about it from Heather Cox Richardson , a historian who covers current events. "As their policies threatened to lose voters by concentrating wealth upward and hollowing out the middle class, Republicans increasingly warned that minority voters wanted socialism and were destroying the nation to get it. Trump rode that narrative to power, and now tearing down the current government is the idea that drives the Republican base." While we're at it, here's another funny photo from the Onion: And then: I listened to the Times podcast about George Santos . He basically lied about, I don't know, 80% of his resume, and has a mysterious $700k in his "corporation" which has no clients. So he's a Russian or Chinese plant, o...

The case for Harris

Motley Kamuka Blog endorses Kamala Harris. In general, Trump just wants to lower taxes on the rich, and do nothing, sell whatever influence he can to line his pockets. Apparently the emoluments clause in the constitution has no teeth. Harris has a set of ideas about policy that are fairly middle of the road. In most countries she's would be seen as a centrist. Spin about her radical agendas are exaggerated.  I'm not sure how he got past " grab them by the pussy ", but he did and here we are. Women: Obviously the idea of giving women pregnancy tests at the borders of the state, and then if they come back and don't have a baby, they go to jail, isn't really what most women want. Pick Harris.  I understand if you think abortion is murder, maybe you've been told that by the Catholic church, which has the same ideal of Buddhism that you don't kill--so follow your religion for yourself. Not everyone is Christian or Buddhist or even has a religion. Women are ...
