The Peripheral

The Peripheral has an 8 episode season on Amazon Prime in the USA, probably elsewhere since they produced it. Through Reddit I have realized that each country has a set of shows on the various streaming services, and that sometimes another country will get a show that I want to watch on a streaming service I have, but not in my country.

Chloe Grace Moretz (25) is the Atlanta Florence Pugh. Not really attractive, an everywoman, even though she is a model. I don't think they were going for an everywoman, but the budget and all.

She was raised in Cartersville Georgia, so she has the authentic southern accent the role requires. The town's list of famous people were obscure people in professional sports, musicians, journalists, judges, preachers and actors. Kind of quiet setting to get your bearings before you push out into the mean wide world. I don't know her brothers experience was in the small town, she has 2 gay brothers, and she's an ally.

Her father is a plastic surgeon, and heir to the Moretz hosiery business, bought out in 2011 for $350 million.

She dated Brooklyn Beckham, but he's married to another woman now for a while. She is a democrat. In 2016 she decided to take more control of her career, and does artsy things she likes.

She was the bratty daughter Kaylie Hooper of the owner of NBC in 30 Rock, that's the only role I remember her in, from her extensive work. I'd like to see her movie about being sent to a conversion camp, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, and the sci-fi movie Mother/Android.

The Peripheral is a fun enough sci-fi series. It looks like there will only be one season. The show is just good enough to watch, like Willow, or Resident Alien.

Katie Leung (35) is also in it, I was trying to remember where I knew her from and she's Harry Potter's first love interest Cho Chang. She has a photography blog on Tumblr

Democracy or democrazy?

Admittedly the choice between corrupt democrats and corrupt republicans isn't the political choice I want. I'd rather vote my way towards fairness, elimination of poverty, anti-trust laws that fight the consolidation of corporations (you read about grocery stores lately?), education, infrastructure. What you do get is a vote for democrats that vote to end rail strikes ( source ) because they can't carve out of the profits a sick leave, versus reality denying, Russian bought, obstructionists who might lower taxes, and want smaller government. The Ron Swanson's of the world who hate government and work in government. I've been running into people who believe the corrupt choices aren't worth even making. Reasons not to pay attention.I've thought that a few times in my life, but I don't think that now.  There are real choices about health care for women, and even just an attitude towards democracy. It's hard to fight past the rhetoric, and understand eve...

Manet and Degas

Brilliant video explaining the exhibit. Go to the Met and see the exhibit! It's really quite special.  In the last gallery the painting this sketch is based off of, of the execution of a Mexican president. The painting has been cut into sections, and the surviving Degas has reassembled them. NY Times review
