Toledo War

Giuliani is Satan, but he said something interesting: The UP should go to Wisconsin (source). Is he really suggesting that things should make sense? Visually it doesn't make sense, but if you look at the history, you can understand how arbitrary lines are drawn. He wishes he was a dictator, or even back in power instead of waiting for the hookers to come by and trying to pay off his child support at the very last minute to avoid arrest.

The Toledo War is how Wisconsin ceded the UP to Michigan. Don't remember the Toledo War? You're not conversant in American history 1835–36? It was about control of the mouth of the Maumee River and the inland shipping opportunities. The Toledo strip would take care of that. Both states deployed militias on opposite sides of the Maumee River near Toledo, but besides mutual taunting, there was little interaction between the two forces. The single military confrontation of the "war" ended with a report of shots being fired into the air, incurring no casualties.

Michigan's loss of 1,100 square miles (2,800 km2) of agricultural land and the port of Toledo was offset by the gain of 9,000 square miles (23,000 km2) of timber and ore-rich land. Part of how the line was drawn was based on inaccurate maps and not dividing land holdings into two states.

For me it seems weird for states to quibble. We're all the same country, right? You take the ore out of Wisconsin or Michigan it doesn't matter. But states fight over taxes.

Do you know who was president then? Andrew Jackson. After the "Frostbitten Convention", Michigan finally agreed to terms.

As our country fights for more state rights, states are fighting $10k off on student loans--a federal policy. Wisconsin wants it reported as income on the state taxes, and a Texas judge has upheld the ruling. It's hard to follow all the state machinations, but the point is that states are asserting their rights over a federal vision.

I'm sure this has happened a lot in my over half a century of living, and I haven't followed politics closely until a guy who advocates grabbing married women by the pussy got power. Usually the avaricious Republicans rail against federal money, but take it and claim credit for anything good it does. But in this case it's going to educated people, an enemy of Republicans. There are educated conservatives, but there aren't that many educated voting Republican. Unless you accept the faustian bargain of just obstruction and chicanery in government to combat activist progressives. Some do and drink the kool aid.

So all the trade of the Maumee river will go to Ohio, and that will make Ohio a stronger state. I used to think I'd fight for Wisconsin more than I'd fight for USA, but the way Wisconsin has gone, it's hard to imagine that, and I haven't lived there for 32 years. It's still in my heart and soul.

Wikipedia has a good list of Civil Unrest in USA. January 6th is included among this list.

Manet and Degas

Brilliant video explaining the exhibit. Go to the Met and see the exhibit! It's really quite special.  In the last gallery the painting this sketch is based off of, of the execution of a Mexican president. The painting has been cut into sections, and the surviving Degas has reassembled them. NY Times review

6 month old podcast

Al Franken has a podcast , and he has my favorite Heather Cox Richardson , and they have an interesting discussion. He talks about the knife edge. She really explains the Republican strategy. Flood the zone with shit. Alternate facts, and fake news opens up the idea that there is no reality. It's basically reality versus false reality.  The goal is to both get people to back away from politics, and to tell them how to specifically think. Developed in Russia, a system of overturning democracy. Running fake candidates, who switch parties, and running candidates with the same name. Blackmail is a technique. Create a fake reality that people come to believe. They're willing to vote for a narrative is not true, and they're willing to vote away their rights.  You can flip it and use the same tools. You can weaponize social media by ignoring the shit, and fight back against all these techniques. People defend democracy. They're talking about community and caring for people and ...
