Star Wars

Yesterday was supposedly the anniversary of Star Wars 45 years ago. Wikipedia says it was released May 25 1977. I didn't see it then but probably a month or so later. I kept thinking that it's a under rated movie, but I'm pretty sure it's gotten some praise and fame and rewards. So I started watching the movies to prepare for Friday's release of a few episodes of Obi Wan on Disney +.

I think about Obi Wan's advice to listen to your inner voice.

I think about all the limbs that are cut off, from the monster in the snow in the second one, to the arm of the guy in Mos Eisley when he tries to shoot Luke. Every once in a while I say in Darth Vader's voice to my children, "I am your father," and I expect them to scream, "NO!"

Those first three movies are great. I love it that Lea didn't wear a bra because there was no need in the future. I wonder at the intrigue behind the scenes. Does Harrison Ford adopt the persona of a rascal after playing one?

I met someone who hadn't seen the movies. Felt sorry for her lack. I don't like the Yankees play by play guy but he brags about not seeing it. I guess I brag about not caring about the Depp versus Heard hearings. Some things we choose not to pay attention to. That's a powerful protest. I've lost interest in Trump. He's been irrelevant for a while now. Except the sad legacy of asshats feeling empowered by him. His campaign called headquarters the death star. And it was blown up in the end.

Manet and Degas

Brilliant video explaining the exhibit. Go to the Met and see the exhibit! It's really quite special.  In the last gallery the painting this sketch is based off of, of the execution of a Mexican president. The painting has been cut into sections, and the surviving Degas has reassembled them. NY Times review

6 month old podcast

Al Franken has a podcast , and he has my favorite Heather Cox Richardson , and they have an interesting discussion. He talks about the knife edge. She really explains the Republican strategy. Flood the zone with shit. Alternate facts, and fake news opens up the idea that there is no reality. It's basically reality versus false reality.  The goal is to both get people to back away from politics, and to tell them how to specifically think. Developed in Russia, a system of overturning democracy. Running fake candidates, who switch parties, and running candidates with the same name. Blackmail is a technique. Create a fake reality that people come to believe. They're willing to vote for a narrative is not true, and they're willing to vote away their rights.  You can flip it and use the same tools. You can weaponize social media by ignoring the shit, and fight back against all these techniques. People defend democracy. They're talking about community and caring for people and ...
