Obi-wan Kenobi

Spoilers...beware. Two episodes have come out. There will be 6 in the end, they come out on Wednesdays.

Quibbles first. I don't like the scrubbed violence. Third Sister cuts off a woman's hand and you don't hear her screaming in the background, like I imagine you would if you hand was chopped off. I get it that Star Wars has to have a limb flying off at some point. I've decided it means that life cuts off pieces of you, but you can still find wholeness through the trials of life. The hanged man isn't hung by his neck, he's strung up and it doesn't really show how he died or a wound.

Quibble, I didn't like how Leia's father says, "one more fight," because there is no last fight. It's almost like American liberals who find themselves fighting for abortion rights. It's perennial, it's never going to go away. There is no one last fight. Little Leia is pretty cool, she's sassy, she has the energy. The younger generation brings the energy.

The Inquisitors say that Obi-wan will turn himself in. They use his caring for others to expose himself. Like the low conscientious conservatives who enjoy drinking liberal tears. There is no scot-free path.

I love it that Ewan McGregor's daughter sells him drugs in the second episode. Esther-Rose McGregor is a drug dealer. I think about how Ewan McGregor breakout movie was Trainspotting, where he was a drug addict.

The inquisitors are sinister, I like that, and their anger has them turn on each other. Live by the sword and die by the sword.

A friend who stayed up to midnight to watch, said that Reva was a padawan in Jedi training. She wants to revenge Darth Vader for making her a street urchin of Coruscant. Seems a potential idea.

I really like these series. Mandalorian, Boba Fett and now Obi-wan Kenobi. I'm rewatching the movies. I took a break after 7 of them, too much pew pew.

There has been some negative stuff, racist stuff, said online to the actress of Reva Sevander. Moses Ingram is not to be attacked for portraying a character. I've seen more people denouncing it, including Ewan McGregor, than actual negative stuff. Even so, it's to be condemned. Ingram has an MFA from Yale, impressive.

Episode 3

Starts out with Kenobi meditating, trying to evoke his former master, but instead he's just getting traumatic flashbacks. Ends with Reva confronting Leia, after having killed the pilot that was going to take her away from Mapuzo.

Leia doesn't follow directions, she's got a mind of her own, and she wants to be in charge. She's sarcastic, challenging. Leia is good at improvising. She's pretty perceptive, intuitive, precocious.

Where was episode 3 shot on location, the planet called Mapuzo? El Segundo, California? They mine Vitrium. They want to get to Jobiim. Carlos Jobim the great bossa nova musician?

I love Frek, great character. Indeed, the dinosaur characters, the big furry monsters Leia walked under the legs. I can't help but think Farscape pushed the exotic nature of aliens in space.

Manet and Degas

Brilliant video explaining the exhibit. Go to the Met and see the exhibit! It's really quite special.  In the last gallery the painting this sketch is based off of, of the execution of a Mexican president. The painting has been cut into sections, and the surviving Degas has reassembled them. NY Times review

The case for Harris

Motley Kamuka Blog endorses Kamala Harris. In general, Trump just wants to lower taxes on the rich, and do nothing, sell whatever influence he can to line his pockets. Apparently the emoluments clause in the constitution has no teeth. Harris has a set of ideas about policy that are fairly middle of the road. In most countries she's would be seen as a centrist. Spin about her radical agendas are exaggerated.  I'm not sure how he got past " grab them by the pussy ", but he did and here we are. Women: Obviously the idea of giving women pregnancy tests at the borders of the state, and then if they come back and don't have a baby, they go to jail, isn't really what most women want. Pick Harris.  I understand if you think abortion is murder, maybe you've been told that by the Catholic church, which has the same ideal of Buddhism that you don't kill--so follow your religion for yourself. Not everyone is Christian or Buddhist or even has a religion. Women are ...

Gravity's Rainbow Notes Franz Pokler

From pp 397-433: Franz Pokler , a German rocket scientist. He is marginally associated with early attempts to develop rockets in the 1920's. During the war, Weissmann controls Pokler, giving him routine assignments and keeping him in line by allowing him yearly visits from a girl who he says is Pokler's daughter. The girl spends the rest of the year in a concentration camp, and Weissmann's implied threat is that she will be killed if Pokler fails to cooperate with Weissmann's scheme. Weissmann's purpose is to use Pokler to make one small part for the A4 rocket. In the end, having performed his task, Pokler is released; Slothrop meets him living quietly in the ruins of a children's village after the end of the war. His daughter also survives.
