Resident Alien and life on this planet

We're living in uncanny times, and Resident Alien expresses that. It's a dangerous gambit to make an alien learning to ways of America, the gimmick can get old quick. There have been some interesting lines, and funny moments. I also like it that the female stars don't have Cameron Diaz proportions. But when the muslim girl makes friends with the boy who sees the alien, that gets me wet in the eyes. Hey I just got why the British call being emotional "wet". They had the stiff upper lip in World War 2, and had to get saved by their children. Americans have rugged individualism but it's so they can be nihilistic partiers.

Resident Alien has 10 episodes. It's a little Mork and Mindy, it's a little X-Files, it's a little Eureka and Northern Exposure, and part Our Idiot Brother. I don't like the day drinking jokes. I wonder if there's an uptick in human moments since Darth Vader was our president.

I wonder if we're increasing our tolerance for reality. Teen adoption. It's like The Perks of Being a Wallflower up in here. I watched Perks last night and quite enjoyed it. I think I have to watch the movie first, because if I read the book first, then I don't like the movie. Perks had domestic violence, like Resident Alien.

You can learn to be a doctor off Google, that should make a lot of doctors happy.

Alan Tudyk is a favorite because of his role as Wash in Firefly, and Gerhardt, who can't take care of plants, in 28 Days. Him playing basketball is hilarious, he does a pretty good weird alien. I didn't know he was Sonny in I, Robot. I watched that last night, an almost perfect sci-fi movie. Will Smith really has a good career of picking awesome scripts. That's one star I will see his movie because he's in it.  I don't really believe in the star system. He's the exception to the rule.

I'm trying to think about what show has a predictably timed twist. Every show. A cliffhanger ends every episode.

I love the friendship between Sara Tomko playing Asta Twelvetrees and D'arcy Bloom played by Alice Wetterlund. They talk a lot about guys, but I think their friendship passes the bechdel test.

I've always liked the idea that kids see reality most clearly.

I love the friendship between the sheriff and his deputy. Their karaoke scene is amazing.

Nathan Fillion is the voice of the octopus!

The series has been renewed!

Democracy or democrazy?

Admittedly the choice between corrupt democrats and corrupt republicans isn't the political choice I want. I'd rather vote my way towards fairness, elimination of poverty, anti-trust laws that fight the consolidation of corporations (you read about grocery stores lately?), education, infrastructure. What you do get is a vote for democrats that vote to end rail strikes ( source ) because they can't carve out of the profits a sick leave, versus reality denying, Russian bought, obstructionists who might lower taxes, and want smaller government. The Ron Swanson's of the world who hate government and work in government. I've been running into people who believe the corrupt choices aren't worth even making. Reasons not to pay attention.I've thought that a few times in my life, but I don't think that now.  There are real choices about health care for women, and even just an attitude towards democracy. It's hard to fight past the rhetoric, and understand eve

Consent

You couldn't have a better title to a memoir in these times. You can read about Humbert Humbert, and other male narratives, but the female narrative of the statutory rape is fulfilled by this book. I feel slightly ill while reading this book. What she goes through is off, and it's hard to put a finger on it besides  Hebephilia . All the collaborating details from her mother, to her doctors, to her father. Vanessa Springora will be remembered for other things, she is a director and a publisher. I'm not sure if  Gabriel Matzneff will be remembered for other things. At least not on this side of the pond. I do have a kind of jealousy for the appreciation of the intellectual life in France.  Matzneff cites Lewis Carroll , and others as having the appreciation for youth. I read his Wikipedia page. That led to other questions about photographers who take pictures of their children. That led me down a creepy path. As much as Springora tries to not make it sexy, I wonder how many
