Reconsidering Hemingway

I had a dream where I had a literature advisor. She was saying that I'd really have to lay into Hemingway to do the work.

I got this idea. You know when a pimp suggests he'll give a necklace to a popular hooker. If you snicker along side the pimp, then you continue to support the exploitation of women.

There's a kind of line. You accept that exploitation is part of the world, and you work with that system. Or you work against that system.

Waking up the thinking continues.

When you look at the negative side of Hemingway, you cross the divide. He goes from someone who articulated male desire and chivalry, to someone who didn't adequately credit Fitzgerald for editing The Sun Also rises, or credit Sherwood Anderson for giving him his break. You look at his shabby treatment of his family once they needed him as a rescuer. You look at the way he just moves on from women.

The disillusioned veil falls away, and you see a very flawed human, who was very popular and many men like to read him. He created a distinctive style and lived interesting experiences so that he could write about them.

Then there is Nick Miller, the character on New Girl. He decides he needs to write like hemingway, and so he gets drunk at the zoo. He's become a caricature of a hard drinking big game hunter. Like one of Donald Trump's sons.

Either you are fighting for the equality of all, or you are not. You can't just say that that is how the world work. If you say that you have already chosen a side, and have given up on equality for all. You might say equality is something you have to fight for within a system, but it is not part of the total system.

People in America aren't going to say they want equality for all, they will be afraid they will be brought in front of Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activity Committee. Never mind that Joseph McCarthy wasn't on that committee. That lead to the Hollywood Blacklist. That trauma in the American psyche lingers over America that ended in 1957.

Who owns the roads? The Americans do. That is communism. Every country is a mixture of communism and capitalism. When you sell the schools and prisons to the highest bidder, that is a move towards capitalism. Most people see primary education as not an inherently capitalistic situation, don't want people making money off of it. Plus the money comes from the government. Reagan and Thatcher headed these movements.

Platform cooperatives are the solution for people who want to share the wealth with the workers. There are no laws that prevent it in America, and they are a business move towards communism.

Hemingway was fighting the fascism of a right wing dictator. The right always believes it will take a dictator to install a socialist president like Bernie Sanders. When he gets democratically elected, they will shit their pants and act like the democrats did with Trump, and do everything to subvert the administration. These divisive times will not end until after that, when we decide we collectively want more moderates and less mishegoss in government.

Manet and Degas

Brilliant video explaining the exhibit. Go to the Met and see the exhibit! It's really quite special.  In the last gallery the painting this sketch is based off of, of the execution of a Mexican president. The painting has been cut into sections, and the surviving Degas has reassembled them. NY Times review

The case for Harris

Motley Kamuka Blog endorses Kamala Harris. In general, Trump just wants to lower taxes on the rich, and do nothing, sell whatever influence he can to line his pockets. Apparently the emoluments clause in the constitution has no teeth. Harris has a set of ideas about policy that are fairly middle of the road. In most countries she's would be seen as a centrist. Spin about her radical agendas are exaggerated.  I'm not sure how he got past " grab them by the pussy ", but he did and here we are. Women: Obviously the idea of giving women pregnancy tests at the borders of the state, and then if they come back and don't have a baby, they go to jail, isn't really what most women want. Pick Harris.  I understand if you think abortion is murder, maybe you've been told that by the Catholic church, which has the same ideal of Buddhism that you don't kill--so follow your religion for yourself. Not everyone is Christian or Buddhist or even has a religion. Women are ...

AOC

Dark Brandon meet Dark Alex. I see her advising the republicans to stick to their guns and never compromise. They don’t want to do anything, only obstruct. So they don’t actually need to be unified. Chaos isn’t organized. This is fine. Read all about it from Heather Cox Richardson , a historian who covers current events. "As their policies threatened to lose voters by concentrating wealth upward and hollowing out the middle class, Republicans increasingly warned that minority voters wanted socialism and were destroying the nation to get it. Trump rode that narrative to power, and now tearing down the current government is the idea that drives the Republican base." While we're at it, here's another funny photo from the Onion: And then: I listened to the Times podcast about George Santos . He basically lied about, I don't know, 80% of his resume, and has a mysterious $700k in his "corporation" which has no clients. So he's a Russian or Chinese plant, o...
