Chappell Roan

Is this my last political post? I'm hoping to ignore politics, but that seems unlikely. I mostly avoided politics, and I even thought it doesn't matter, like Chappell Roan

The choice this year is between regressive, fascism and bland middle of the road stable government. Bland middle of the road politics isn't that exciting. Most people want something sexy, and if you want that, I'd say voting against fascism, sexism, racism and destroying the economy for tax breaks for the rich is pretty sexy. I honestly would vote for a senile out of it with a cold Biden. Anything is better than Trump. To not see a difference between the two parties like Chappell Roan--that's just apathy on a grand level and I find it disgusting. She thinks she's in the tax bracket that can survive Trump killing the economy, she thinks she's that great. Just ask Katy Perry how easily it slips away.

Some people are frustrated with America supporting Israel. Obviously the genocide of Gaza is something many people don't want to support and struggle with a government that does that. Biden does, and Harris would too. The thing is not voting would put Trump in, and he's even worse for Gaza. In fact he broke the Logan Act by talking to Netanyahu--Trump's persistent infringement of laws, from election interference, to insurrection incitement, has gone unpunished, and that's his appeal.

We have a lot of laws and rules in our society and people being held accountable and having to follow the laws is annoying and upsetting to some people. They actually like his sociopathic ways, and root for him to get away with breaking the law. A neighbor of mine who obviously watches faux news, which doesn't claim to be news but entertainment, thinks Trump is over prosecuted. He's under prosecuted. He's just running for president, after losing the last election, to avoid prosecution. It's a legal strategy to stay out of jail, which is where he should be because he asked them to find votes in Georgia, a flagrant violation of the laws. They have him on tape. We have enough evidence to convict him on many things, but the gutless judicial is another thing he's hijacked somehow.

That's what's so offensive to me. He's done all this crime in plain sight, and Americans are so apathetic that they can't be bothered to pay a modicum of attention and reflect a little. So many people on the right wing of politics have paid attention and reflected and even though a middle of the road candidate like Harris rubs them the wrong way, they're still going to be voting for Harris because Trump is so toxic, horrible and wrong for America. It's honestly going to be a landslide election. Trump has cowed the press so much it seems like he's in it, and he could dupe America, so it's really important to go out and vote for Harris, even if you have conservative political instincts or are on the apathetic side.

I live in an immigrant neighborhood, and I've talked to two immigrants who hate immigrants, they've assimilated so much into American society, where you punch down when you get your citizenship. They imagine there are all these lazy immigrants who just waltz into America and get housing and all these benefits for nothing. When I was a social worker, everyone I met wished they had better benefits, but what they got was the bare minimum, even below the bare minimum. Yes, every home in the projects had a huge TV and I can't afford one, but they struggled everywhere else. They were not living high on the hog and indeed they felt as though they deserved more.

I can't reconcile the hatred of immigrants by immigrants and my experiences working with the poor not getting royal services and free things from the government. America does a rope a dope on the immigrants and this one woman imagined all the immigrants, excluding herself, were milking the government dry, when the opposite is true. I guess it takes a little more generosity of spirit to want to welcome the new people.

America is built on the fear of falling through the cracks in the struggle for existence. It's built on denying people insurance, and forcing people to accept low paying jobs just to get by. It's built on immigrant guest labor being milked dry by people who don't have social security numbers. And yet the immigrants don't want to go to red states, they want to go to blue urban areas. My immigrant friend said, "I don't look at it that deep." Maybe accept that you're not really looking at things deep enough if you hate your own kind. She was saying immigrants need to do more to assimilate into America. I told her about 6th grade when we had a debate: Is America a melting pot or a tossed salad?

When I grew up there were 3 network news programs: ABC, NBC and CBS. They generally went straight down the middle, and were fairly objective. Cable allowed for more slanted news, you could choose Fox News which is slanted for the far right political perspective.

PBS newshour, which gives you more coverage with fewer commercials, they didn't have commercials when I was younger. I lived in England and they didn't have any commercials on TV when I lived there! It was beautiful. Netflix is so popular because it doesn't have commercials, people hate them.

I read today that Chappell Roan "sees problems with both sides" and I instantly took a great dislike to her. She's this pop star that thinks being famous and rich is like being in an abusive relationship and she can't endorse Harris?! That's means she's conservative and greedy and doesn't care if Trump burns the economy down. She thinks she'll survive, she might even like it if the pedophile rapist felon is president again.

This isn't the election to see problems on both sides. You dislike government, the democrats aren't doing enough? That's because the far right has such a control on politics the democrats can only be middle of the road. Lets get some democrats in office for a while and swing the nation left, then we can talk about real change. Meanwhile the choice is between a pedophile, rapist, felon, who would wreck the economy, and a middle of the road democrats, that might make you feel like they could do more, but honestly politically, the dominance of the far right wing has been going on since Reagan, that we can't really have some policies that would really impact the country in positive ways. It's bland middle of the road and stability versus fascism by a monster. Don't tell me there's no difference.

As a woman, how can see not see the banning of abortions, women dying because a woman has to carry children who won't live, basically taking the decision out of the doctor's hands, absolutely and with this blanket decision. Seeing problems with both sides is not paying attention (example).

Bothsidesism has ruined the New York Times, CNN and NPR. This is what's so frustrating to me, that someone who imagines they're a voice of truth could misuse their spotlight to project a indecisiveness. It's worse than Janet Jackson saying Harris doesn't have a black father, which is just plain weird and misinformed. This is the Trump playbook. Say something stupid to get attention and capture the imagination.

Look at your real choice. It's simple. Don't listen Chappell Roan about politics. Enjoy her music, if you like. Identify with her complaining about the problems of fame, if you like. But do not follow her politically, please.

Update: She clarifies she’s not voting for Trump, but I think not voting for Harris is almost a vote for Trump.

Update: She’s figuring it out, says she’ll vote for Harris.

Democracy or democrazy?

Admittedly the choice between corrupt democrats and corrupt republicans isn't the political choice I want. I'd rather vote my way towards fairness, elimination of poverty, anti-trust laws that fight the consolidation of corporations (you read about grocery stores lately?), education, infrastructure. What you do get is a vote for democrats that vote to end rail strikes ( source ) because they can't carve out of the profits a sick leave, versus reality denying, Russian bought, obstructionists who might lower taxes, and want smaller government. The Ron Swanson's of the world who hate government and work in government. I've been running into people who believe the corrupt choices aren't worth even making. Reasons not to pay attention.I've thought that a few times in my life, but I don't think that now.  There are real choices about health care for women, and even just an attitude towards democracy. It's hard to fight past the rhetoric, and understand eve

You couldn't have a better title to a memoir in these times. You can read about Humbert Humbert, and other male narratives, but the female narrative of the statutory rape is fulfilled by this book. I feel slightly ill while reading this book. What she goes through is off, and it's hard to put a finger on it besides  Hebephilia . All the collaborating details from her mother, to her doctors, to her father. Vanessa Springora will be remembered for other things, she is a director and a publisher. I'm not sure if  Gabriel Matzneff will be remembered for other things. At least not on this side of the pond. I do have a kind of jealousy for the appreciation of the intellectual life in France.  Matzneff cites Lewis Carroll , and others as having the appreciation for youth. I read his Wikipedia page. That led to other questions about photographers who take pictures of their children. That led me down a creepy path. As much as Springora tries to not make it sexy, I wonder how many
